10 year old dies after imitating Naruto

A 10 year old boy dies in the hospital two days later after being buried head first in a sandbox by his playmates. He had reportedly asked his playmates to bury him in order to recreate the attacks used by the fictional ninja from the Naruto anime’s fictional Village Hidden in the Sand. Codey Porter’s friends called for help after realizing that he wasn’t breathing. Porter had been resuscitated with CPR and taken to an Everett hospital and later transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Seattle where he died.1689964130_b1afd6e8c3.jpg

Well, here are some comments by the public. (From animenewsnetwork)

My question here, as in all such cases, is where were the adults? I mean these are little kids and you’re letting them loose in the back yard with no supervision? Why wasn’t someone keeping an eye on them?

As the old saying goes…. “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Well this is awful news, I hope the goverment does the right thing and bans all future episodes of Naruto until the boy is given the all clear. I think Anime should be taken a close look at in America it’s far to violent and dangerous for young kids to watch. Maybe they should put a stop to all anime on TV until it is looked at more closely to decide if it’s suitable to be watched. Hope the kid gets better.

When I saw this on the news today, they just said the kid was imitating a cartoon from TV… but I just knew it was Naruto. This is not going to do anything good for the general public’s opinion of anime.

I may sound a little cold, but I don’t feel any kind of compassion with kids as stupid as this one.

Some people laugh at this piece of news or some feel sad for the boy. I regard this as an unfortunate freak incident and can happen to any kid with the odds of 1.01. Nonetheless, R.I.P.

  1. I feel bad for the kid, but they shouldn’t try and ban the anime (I’m not even that big of a fan of Naruto). Kids try and imitate everything they see on TV, it’s not only anime, anyway there is far worse things they could be watching besides Naruto. We have to face it, the kid just wasn’t that bright.

    I agree with you lostty.

Though I dun like the Naruto anime totally, after Naruto and Sasuke fought their epic battle. :P

And hope you can remind me, but is there a technique in Naruto where the shinobi is buried headfirst?

Though it is a tragedy for the child to have died, it was the parents’ and the child’s fault to be blamed. 10 year olds are not supposed to be watching Naruto, and though it should not be banned from television, it should be moved to a lter time, during the Adult Swim program, as the show does contain a massive amount of violence and sexual intentions that children under 13 should not be seeing. The Naruto rating is 13+, and parents should be weary of what their children watch.

I agree with your suggestion that maybe Naruto should move to a later timing. However, I don’t think it’s anybody’s fault because I think it’s purely an accident. Banning Naruto doesn’t solve the main problem of the amount of violence exposed to the children. Giving rating is just half to the solution. Educating the kids will be important.

I agree with Stan on this one. Children do lack supervision, but others besides parents should be held accountable. We are all to blame for not properly guiding our youth. I, myself, watch the show and so do my younger brothers. I make sure they keep out of danger if they want to immitate what they see. We should all take on our role as elders to watch over children from this point on. So, next time you see kids unsupervised, make sure to tell someone or watch them.

  6. It is awful that the child died, but the parents and children are at fault still. They should have known better. His friends should not have gone with what he said, the child should have known better to ask for it, and a parent or some type of guardian should have been watching.
It’s sad that none of the children thought about the consequences of what they were doing and that, it seems, the children lacked the sense to know that they were putting their friend in danger.
My little cousins who are 10 and 12 year olds also watch Naruto along with my brother and me too. The 10 year olds know that they should not copy what they watch on TV. The most they probably would do is play with toys like the Star Wars light sabers, but they know better than to actually go and swing full force at each other.
The whole imitation of Naruto tragedy reminds me of when there were news about kids imitating the Power Rangers and getting hurt. It all comes down to educating the children so that we can avoid tragedies like the 10 year old boy had to do through.

It was just a freak accident. I mean, banning the anime won’t do any good, look at all of the other programs the children of America could be watching. Ban CSI because some kid might shoot his friend (come on). If we banned anything that was violent that children could get to we wouldn’t have anything left to watch. The child just wasn’t that bright. I feel horrible for him, but once he started choking, lift your head! 2, Naruto is rated teen, the child shouldn’t have been watching it anyway…

But I do feel bad for him.

Now, I’m going to say right now, I hate Naruto. I can honestly say that I have watched and read enough to be fed up with the series, and would dearly love to see it gone from history. With this grain of salt, I must admit I agree with most of these people replying.

As you said, ‘where were the adults?’. This one asks where the adults were when the kid watched such an abhorrently annoying show? Who knows. Maybe they were working, or out getting dinner, or even taking a nap. I’m not trying to blame them. However, we must realize that we put too much emphasis on T.V. shows and video games. These are the creations we made to take away the necessity of the babysitter. There is rarely any adult supervision anymore, just the ‘boob tube’ rotting our tiny little minds to nothingness. Kids won’t play outside anymore, cause they would miss their favorite programs on the freaking television. It isn’t the programmer’s fault. It isn’t the parent’s fault. It isn’t even the friends fault. These are just symptoms of an underlying problem in America. We are facing a severe crisis of unthinking here, folks, and we so desperately want someone to blame. Problem is, we all are. We have been trained to respond to instant gratification, which has caused this tragedy. The boy in question decided he wanted to be as strong as Naruto. He didn’t think his plan through, and don’t tell me that a ten-year-old doesn’t have the intellectual capability to remember that you can’t breath under sand. If I am correct, they did mention that in the series.
Until we take away the instant gratification, we will be plagued with incidents such as this. Taking it off the air won’t solve the underlying problem, just as giving some one aspirin won’t heal a broken bone. If it isn’t anime, then it’s the crime shows, or the silly cartoons. If the kid had tried to build a house underwater, would you then be calling for Spongebob to be removed from the air?

I’m not here to make a major stink about you wanting to take a badly done anime off the air. I simply want you to think about the real cause of this boy’s death, and what you can do in your own community to fix it.

  9. i am 15 and a naruto fan. that kid was at least 5 not 10. i’m smart.i watch naruto. my 10 year old bro watches it more than me. he know every single naruto episode. naruto is partly educational.it teaches endurence.it teachhes chakra control. iknow u think it is not real but it is. he really did the 1st resangan step.he ruined my history report and ran. no he did not use his nailes

  10. suzveen Says:

i mean common why should they ban naruto i mean common i still feel really bad about it but seriously his friends should have chosen not to bury him overall review his friends fault

  11. seriously the kid probbaly wasnt the brightest crayon in the box. they shouldn’t ban the anime altogether but parents should limit their kids on how much they watch anime. i mean im a fan myself of anime but not to the point of buying all the merchandise and imatating what i see on tv. i actually ENJOY it.
